Dimitris Christoulas, a retired pharmacist 77 years of age committed suicide on Wednesday April 4th, at Syntagma (i.e. Constitution) Square in central Athens, in front of the Houses of Parliament.
Maybe the word suicide is wrong. Actually it is a political action. The inhuman conditions of insecurity, instability, poverty and anger that generated the system of the disgraceful financial policies, drive people to despair and death. Among many acts of suicide during the past two years in Greece, which are attributed to the pitiful state its citizens have been reduced to, this one bears a particular interest.
He left a letter before he shot himself. The letter reads as follows:
‘The Tsolakoglou* occupation government literally deprived me of any chance of survival that depended upon a decent pension, for which I had to pay on my own (without any government backing) over the course of 35 years.
Since my age prevents me from individual drastic action (of course I wouldn’t rule out the possibility to follow the first Greek who would take up a Kalashnikov), I see no alternative but to a dignified end, before having to resort to scavenging through rubbish for my food.
I believe that the youth with no future will one day take up arms and hang the national traitors upside down at Syntagma Square, as the Italians did in 1945 with Mussolini (Piazza Loreto of Milan)’.

[*Georgios Tsolakoglou was a Greek military officer who became the first Prime Minister of the Greek collaborationist government during the Axis Occupation in 1941-1942.]
